Aaron Karo / Biography

On a sleepless night in September 1997, Aaron Karo, then a hard-partying freshman at the University of Pennsylvania, sent an email filled with humorous anecdotes and observations about college life to twenty of his high school buddies. His friends got a kick out of it, so Karo started emailing out his thoughts on a regular basis. Soon, via forwarding and word-of-mouth, the column spread and Karo began signing up subscribers who wished to receive his emails directly. In April 2001, after writing every month for four years, Karo sent out his final issue. He had amassed over 11,000 subscribers around the world.Following graduation, Karo moved from his hometown on Long Island to Manhattan and began working at a top Wall Street investment bank. He also signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster to publish a collection of his emails and began writing an all-new email column about life after college. In July 2002, he made his stand-up debut, an event so anticipated the New York Post devoted to it a full-page article. In August 2002, "Ruminations on College Life" was published and immediately attracted nationwide media attention. Considered an instant classic about the college experience, the book is already in its eighth printing and landed Karo his own advice column in Seventeen Magazine.Upon publication of the book, Karo left Wall Street to focus on stand-up and writing full-time. Bolstered by a growing cult following, he was soon headlining sold-out shows at colleges and comedy clubs across the country, including Carolines, the Laugh Factory, and the New York and Hollywood Improvs. He is also a sought-after lecturer, booking speaking engagements at colleges nationwide. In 2004, Karo entered his second year of Meisner training and made his television debut as a commentator on VH1's popular "I Love the 90s" series. He also signed a blind script deal with Twentieth Century Fox to create a sitcom about the lives of twentysomethings in New York City. He completed work on the pilot script, entitled "The Whatever Years," in early 2005.In May 2005, Simon & Schuster published Karo's second book, "Ruminations on Twentysomething Life." Like its predecessor, the book immediately became a Top 100 Amazon bestseller. Later in the year, Karo appeared on NBC's "I Want to Be a Hilton" and VH1's "I Love the 80s 3-D." In October 2005, his newest advice column, "Recovering Frat Boy," premiered in Penthouse Magazine.Karo's move to Los Angeles in the summer of 2005 has only helped solidify his status as one of comedy's rising stars. He continues to perform across the country and at his monthly show at the Hollywood Improv, and his first stand-up DVD is scheduled for release in the fall of 2006. Meanwhile, Karo's bi-weekly email column entitled "RUMINATIONS," which details his evolution from frat boy to manhood, now boasts over 45,000 subscribers worldwide and is distributed to major newspapers via his deal with Knight Ridder/Tribune.
