She was originally a development executive. She met her husband, Charles Shyer when she was helping develop a script he had written. They eventually began writing and producing together.
Since the success of What Women Want (2000) and Something's Gotta Give (2003), she is very sought after as a writer and director. She is particularly in demand because she writes great parts in hit movies for adults.
She wrote for a TV show based on a Goldie Hawn film (Private Benjamin) and a few years later wrote a film starring Goldie Hawn (Protocol).
