Bert was born in West Islip, New York a small town on the south shore of Long Island. After graduating from West Islip High School, Bert attended The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (A.M.D.A.)in New York city where he studied classical theater. After graduating from A.M.D.A. he quickly started performing in New York's off Broadway circuit. His theater work includes "Henry V", "Gulf War", "Macbeth", and "Breaking Legs" to name just a few. In Overnight Sensation (2000), Bert's first film role he had the opportunity to play opposite Maxwell Caulfield and Mark Goddard. It was while shooting Overnight Sensation that he got a chance to work and meet people from the HBO series OZ (1997). Shortly after getting the role of Mitch in "Overnight Sensation" Bert appeared in the HBO series. In 2002, he relocated to Los Angeles. In 2004 he appeared in the Los Angeles premier of the play Cynics, produced by Tyne Daly, Timothy Daly, and Barry Watson.
