Attended Wayne State University with a major in theater in Detroit, Michigan. Originated the role of "Buddy Bolden" in "Jelly's Last Jam" (directed by George C. Wolfe) at The Mark Taper Forum; he continued this role as a member of the original Broadway cast. Has been performing his own one-man show (plus musician) "Lackawanna Blues" where he portrays over 20 characters from his past, sings and plays the harmonica. Won Broadway's 1996 Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) for August Wilson's "Seven Guitars."
