Grew up in Monroe, Connecicut. Son of comic strip/children's book artist and writer Guy Gilchrist, of "Jim Henson's The Muppets" and "Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy."Founder of "Orange Cow Productions." Also founded a small comedy team for a cable access series, "Dr. Fred's Amazing Exploding Cow Show," while still in high school. The team created six feature-length movies including the original Dr. Fred in 1998, "Dr. Fred Strikes Back", The Star Wars spoof "The Phantom Movie," and the improvised comedy/horror/drama "The Animal Game," all in 1999. Also in 1999 - the short historical spoof "1381."Garrett moved to Los Angeles in 1999, to study film at USC.In summer 2000, he returned to Connecticut to direct and star in "Excaliburger, or the Spatula in the Stone," and an "Animal Game" sequel called "The Animal Effect."In 2001, "Dr. Fred's Amazing Exploding Cow Show" was named #7 on the list of 10 best cable access shows in the country, by Gear magazine.He began to get more serious about filmmaking, and directed several acclaimed shorts while at USC, including "Stripped Away," "Terry Pratchett's Mort" and "The Journey of Truesong."In 2001, after writing several unproduced dramatic scripts (including Easier Than Thinking in 1999 and Midnight Blue in 2001), he began work on an ambitious feature-length drama entitled Gods of Los Angeles. The film, a lengthy romantic epic, and Garrett's magnum opus at the time, began shooting in March 2002, and would not be finished until early 2005.He joined Mike Stoklasa of Chicago's GMP Pictures for films including Gorilla Interrupted (2002), and Jay Bauman of Milwaukee's Blanc Screen Cinema for films including Pervert Goes Home (2001), Clowns and Suicide (2002), and a starring role in Indulgence (2003), which he also co-wrote and did the cinematography for. After Indulgence, Garrett and Jay had a falling-out, and the two went their separate ways.In 2001, Garrett founded the Fastforward community on the web, a place for filmmakers to meet and talk and have fun. The site moved to FFrevolution.com in November 2002. Several "Camp Fastforwards" were held in L.A., where the regulars would meet for a couple days, show movies and drink alcohol.Garrett graduated from USC with a B.A. in Cinema-Television Production in March 2005.
